Week 2

JESUS CHRIST--SON OF GOD

"The gospel teaches that Christ is the Son of God, the Redeemer of the world. No true follower is satisfied to accept him merely as a great Reformer, the ideal Teacher, or even as the one perfect Man. The Man of Galilee is not figuratively, but literally, the Son of the living god." (David O. McKay, Gospel Ideals, p. 46).

"Jesus Christ is the heir of this kingdom--the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh, and holds the keys over all this world" (Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 51)

  1. I was curious by the question, "Why is it significant that Jesus Christ is the only Begotten Son?" I don't know if the answer is spelled out anywhere in scripture. I read through the scriptures in the topical guide under "Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son" and didn't see a clear answer. But the distinct idea that came to my mind is that he is the only begotten perhaps because there would be no confusion as to who would be our Savior in the flesh. In earthly kingdoms if there are multiple heirs to a king there can be some confusion and strife about succession. I think this is true because prophets have said there would be false Christs to deceive. Maybe the Father's own witness that He is the only begotten helps emphasize and in fact authorize/sanction His Son as our Savior, and is intended to sharpen our focus and strengthen our faith and desire to follow Him.

Another question I liked that got me thinking was, "Which of Christ's teachings have meant the most to you in your life?" I'd have to say the teaching of love your enemies, do good to them who hate you, etc. While it is a very challenging thing to put into practice, every time I ever did give away hurt and/or hate for an enemy (or perceived enemy)and prayed for Christ's love to fill my heart, I have always been happier, more peaceful, and the relationship with that person has improved and even blessed my life. May God in heaven continue to give me strength to follow that teaching.
